The compressibilities of metallic lithium and sodium are calculated taking into account the correction for the finite volume of the exchange charge in the equation of state of the Wigner Seitz cell. The results obtained for the bulk modulus are: 1.47 × 10 11 dyn cm −2 for lithium and 0.72 × 10 11 dyn cm −2 for sodium, where the corresponding experimental data are 1.41 × 10 11 dyn cm −2 and about 0.7 × 10 11 dyn cm −2 respectively. No empirical, or semi‐empirical, parameters are included in the calculation.
