An investigation is made of the process by which the activator Mn is incorporated in CaS and SrS, by studying its dependence on activator concentration, flux addition and firing atmosphere. The dependence of the amount of Mn incorporated during the firing on that present before firing was investigated using a paramagnetic resonance technique. This dependence is found to be linear up to some critical concentration after which saturation occurs. It is found that the flux used influences the incorporation process to an extent which is dependent on the nature of the halide. The incorporation process depends also on the firing atmosphere of the phosphor.
