The negative charge of dislocations in NaCl is explained and calculated for specimens containing positive divalent impurites. For the charge per unit length values between −21 × 10 −5 e.s.u./cm and −43 × 10 −5 e.s.u/cm are obtained depending upon the impurity concentration. These results are used to derive the stress required to separate a dislocation from the Debye‐Hückel cloud of vacancies surrounding it.
