The luminescent characteristics and some physical properties of Sn activated alkaline earth orthophosphates can be explained by a simple theory. With the comparison of spectra of different orthophosphates it can be determined that in the emission there are two bands, which are connected with the interstitial and substitutional position of Sn 2+ ions.
