The progress of dynamic recrystallization (DRX) in polycrystalline wrought cobalt (Co) during hot deformation has been studied using a newly developed mechanical approach. The approach is based upon the analysis of the flow curve of the material to quantify the softening which is attributed to DRX. Avrami plots for Co during DRX have been generated using stress–strain curves under various deformation conditions. The values of the Avrami time exponents are ∼3.0. The dependence of the time of half‐softening on strain rate is found to exhibit similar behavior to that of other materials.
