The optical absorption spectra of Cr,Mg:YAG crystals are studied at in‐situ conditions during high‐temperature annealing in reducing and oxidizing atmospheres. The spectra in the visible and near‐infrared regions are measured at temperatures up to 1200 °C. The kinetics of the recharging of chromium ions are studied in the temperature range between 800 °C and 1200 °C and described by mathematical models. The parameters of these models are determined from experimental kinetic curves. (© 2009 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)
