Strontium hexa‐aluminate phosphors activated with Eu 3+ and Sm 3+ ions were produced at low temperatures (500 °C) by the combustion of corresponding metal nitrate–urea mixtures over a period of 5 min. Powder X‐ray diffraction characterization and photoluminescence studies of these samples were carried out. It was found that co‐doping of Sm 3+ ions helps in the partial reduction of Eu 3+ ions to Eu 2+ ions in SrAl 12 O 19 . (© 2006 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)
