A novel intermetallic compound, TbCo 7– x M x (M = 3d transition metal or normal metal), has been successfully synthesized. TbCo 7– x M x crystallizes in a hexagonal TbCu 7 structure with space group of P6/mmm. According to the structural refinement, the M dopants occupy the 2e and 3g crystal positions based on their electronegativities. TbCo 7– x M x exhibits ferromagnetic order. The saturation moment has been calculated with a corrected magnetic valence model; the calculated results agree well with experiment. The correction to the structural stability model of TbCo 7– x M x has been discussed in terms of the effective atomic radius ratio and the difference of electronegativity between Tb and (Co, M).
