This paper is a review of charge exchange processes in rare earth doped insulating materials. After a description of experimental approaches for the location of impurity ions in the host gap, charge transfer and photoionization phenomena are presented. Experimental data are discussed and interpreted using simple models. (© 2005 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)
