Abstract 0.3PZN–0.7PLZT (5/55/45) ceramics with and without nonstoichiometric excess ZnO addition were prepared by a conventional mixing method. The phase structure, microstructure, and dielectric and piezoelectric properties were investigated. Improvements of performances were observed. Excess ZnO could limit the formation of pyrochlore phase and enhance the electrical properties and the degree of the diffuse phase transition. (© 2005 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)
