On page 11, one sentence was deleted in error. The paragraphs should have read as follows: (.  .  .) We assume that most of the individuals in the first term retired as a consequence of entering into the 65–69 age group in 1985–1990. For each state as a potential destination for the 1995–2000 new immigrants, this place attribute was computed from the 2000 Census data in an analogous way. In light of the possibility that the destination choice behaviours of the new immigrants might be affected by the severity of winter, we specify the following climatic factor. Coldness For each state, this variable was defined as a weighted average of the heating degree‐days of cities with records from 1951 to 1980, using city populations as the weights. The unit was 1000 degree (F)‐days. This error will be corrected prior to print publication. The publishers apologise for this error, and any inconvenience it may have caused.
