Impotence in patients is most probably age‐related in the untreated case. The therapy of prostate cancer presents many hazards to the retention of sexual function which should be obvious to most urologists. What is now apparent is that surgical treatment of the disease does not necessarily cause impotence in all who were potent before the start of treatment. Documentation during history taking is essential. Increased awareness of the increased chances of retaining potency by physicians and patients will lead to improved results.
