Abstract We give a review of the powerful inverse scattering method being applied to exact (non‐perturbative) solution of integrable models. As examples, the Heisenberg model of magnets and the nonrelativistic Schrödinger field are considered. Special attention has been paid to finite‐size effects, which cause severe problems during the analysis. Of general interest is the so‐called extraction of vacuum parameters we have demonstrated in great detail.
