This photograph shows an ultracold cloud of lithium atoms in the center of an ultra‐high vacuum steel chamber. The cloud has a diameter of about 1 cm and consists of about 1 billion atoms at a temperature of about 1 mK. The atoms are trapped in a magneto‐optical trap and scatter red laser light. Several mirror images of the cloud can be seen on the steel chamber walls and on the view port. Such cold atom ensembles represent a crucial starting point for experiments in various fields of research, ranging from condensed matter physics to ultracold chemistry.
