We discuss the interplay between field theories and string theory in the quest for new fixed points of the renormalization group. First, we use the recent ideas of Lunin and Maldacena (LM) to make new predictions about the so‐called γ‐deformation of = 4 by taking a Penrose limit which leads to a solvable string theory background. We then extend the LM construction to deal with three dimensional field theories, we study the supersymmetry preservation of the γ‐deformed backgrounds, and we obtain the lagrangian deformations of the corresponding dual field theories.
