In this talk I will present a class of heterotic string theory compactifications which lead to four dimensional N = 1 supersymmetric vacua with standard model gauge group SU (3) C × SU (2) L × U (1) Y . I will compute their massless particle spectrum and show that it contains precisely three families of quarks and leptons and a certain number of SU (2) Higgs doublets.
