We consider the nonlinear optical response of a GaAs layer excited by an ultrafast laser pulse consisting of only a few cycles. The third harmonic component of the transmitted pulse is calculated and compared with experimental results. We use a reduced set of the semiconductor Bloch equations as a model of the electron‐hole system. To describe the propagation of the ultrashort pulse we apply the integral equation method, which explicitly follows time and space evolution without the slowly varying envelope approximation. We use a procedure that efficiently includes the background refractive index, which is very important in the interpretation of the experimental results.
