The level‐splitting of asymptotically degenerate eigenvalues, their discontinuity across a cut and the large‐order behaviour of the perturbation expansion are usually difficult to calculate. In the following we review some methods of calculation with particular emphasis on the periodic potential in order to exhibit the relationship between all three quantities.
