Abstract The influence of the molecule structure on the dielectric anisotropy of nematic liquid crystals was experimentally investigated and discussed from the point of view of the Maier‐Meier theory. Further, the reorientation time of the dipoles in different smectic phases was measured and correlated to the structure of the phases. Some technical aspects are discussed in connection with the dielectric relaxation phenomenon.
