Schwinger's source theory is used to present a pedagogical review of various methods and models in quantum field theory. In the interest of simplicity we start out with a charged scalar model. Later on we also incorporate more complicated concepts in order to treat quantum electrodynamics, effective Lagrangians and model approximations.
