The cover picture shows several important aspects of the microsandwich experiment. The microsandwich test consists of thin explosive films deposited onto metal substrates, which are subsequently “sandwiched” together with the explosive in the center using a thin adhesive layer. Detonation is initiated at the bottom edge of the sandwich, and liner motion is tracked using photonic Doppler velocimetry. This experiment uses significantly less explosive material than a typical sandwich test and is the smallest experiment to yield data that can result in an equation of state for the reaction products of an explosive. Deatails are discussed in the article by Caitlin O'Grady, Robert Knepper, Michael Marquez, and Alexander S. Tappan on page 572 ff.
