The cover picture shows the formal equation for a stoichiometric thermite reaction of a metal with a metal oxide. A reaction occurs readily if the change of the Gibbs free enthalpy of the oxidation process is more negative for the metal to be oxidised (M) than for the metal present as the oxide (M′). Consequently thermitic reactions can also occur between a metal and the oxide of the same metal provided that the oxidation of the metal effects a change in Gibbs free enthalpy that is more negative than the formation of the starting oxide.
