An carlier thermo‐analytical study of black powder using TG, and DSC, has been extended to examine the combustion products of black powder by FTIR emission spectroscopy. The analysis of FTIR spectra shows the presence of CO 2 as major product in gaseous form, and K 2 SO 4 as major solid product. This work also shows how FTIR emission spectroscopy can be applied for the investigation of short lived species.
