A nitroguanidine process development study was performed by investigating the kinetics of dehydration of guanidine nitrate in 81% H 2 SO 4 /5% HNO 3 /14% H 2 O ternary mixtures. An irreversible second order apparent kinetic model lumping both dissolution resistance and chemical reaction resistance was obtained from analysis of the experimental data, and was used to predict the performance of the cascade CSTR and semi‐batch reactor under some feasible conditions. The predicted yields are in reasonably good agreement with the ones from experimental measurements. A reaction mechanism was proposed and was shown to reasonably elucidate the observed rate phenomena.
