Thermal explosion characteristics of lead(II) 2,4‐dinitroresorcinate in comparison with the parent compound 2,4‐dinitroresorcinol has been reinvestigated by mass Spectrometry using fast scan technique. For lead dinitroresorcinate, fragment ions spanned over m/z range 55–244 contrary to the reported range 2–74 by previous researchers. The decomposition pathways are predicted by analysing the fragmentation patterns. Lead, adduct ions and unusual ions were detected. The results are suggestive of the first step of the reaction to be a rupture of the PbO linkage.
