The ignition and combustion behavior of both the 27‐mm and 20‐mm gun propellants Q5560 und A 5021 is identified from a series of detailed experiments conducted on a caliber 20‐mm test fixture gun. A novel invasive technique is applied that permits propellant gas temperature to be evaluated from emission data taken at discrete axial locations within the 20‐mm gun chamber. Supplementary pressure measurements complete the investigation. A correlation of the data obtained at the vent of the pyrotechnic igniter and inside the burning granular propellant bed is presented establishing quantitative relationships between the igniter energy output and the ignition behavior of the propellants.
