A parametric study of the Shipp‐Kaplan procedure shows promise for the use of reduced amounts of cheaper mixed solvent systems, the use of lower quantities of more concentrated hypochlorite, and elimination of the aging period. Use of methanol as the sole reaction solvent at 50°C shows promise; methanol with a hydrophobic cosolvent gave crude HNBB of high purity. Only a slight improvement in yield was obtained; under no conditions did it exceed 82%.
