The present study investigates the disciplinarity of papers describing scientific software (i.e., “software papers”) as the first step to gain a deeper understanding of how science is operated in its material and practice bases. The preliminary analysis mapped 768 software papers in the Journal of Statistical Software and about 57,000 papers that cited them to the five knowledge domains in the CWTS classification system and traced how these papers are cited within and across disciplinary boundaries.
