Patient data ownership is called for but not explicitly conceptualized in the literature. This proposal reports a framework of patient data ownership based which integrates literature from the fields of healthcare information systems, patient‐centered care, and personal health information management. The 6 concepts identified are integrated, on‐demand, access, control, security, and input. The framework is presented to combine and synthesize concepts which are found in disparate fields but are highly related.
