Abstract Recent research indicates that the key events involved in the development of lifelong allergic sensitization to environmental antigens occur during infancy and early childhood. This process involves interactions between mutually antagonistic populations of allergen‐reactive T‐helper lymphocytes, which occur around the time of initial allergen exposure. © 1995 Wiley‐Liss, Inc.
