Corruption is a serious problem in many Asian economies today. According to Transparency International’s 2003 Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI), only 5 of the 16 Asian economies included in the survey of 133 economies scored above 5 out of a 10-point scale, with 10 being the least corrupt. Table 1 below shows that except for Singapore (ranked 5); Hong Kong, China (14); Japan (21); Taipei,China (30); and Malaysia (37), the other 11 Asian economies had scores ranging from 4.3 for the Republic of Korea (50) to 1.3 for Bangladesh (last).
