The strong green fluorescent carbon dots (CDs) with the upconversion property have been directly synthesized using ammonium citrate, NH 3 ·H 2 O, and H 2 O 2 as the precursors in aqueous solution through a simple hydrothermal process. The synthesized green fluorescent CDs also show excellent upconversion property and can be directly used for live HeLa cell imaging without any further modifications.
