Hybrid gold nanoparticles modified with poly( N ‐isopropylacrylamide)‐ block ‐poly(2‐succinyloxyethyl methacrylate) (PNIPAM‐ b ‐PSEMA) brushes are synthesized using surface‐initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI‐ATRP). The “hairy” particles demonstrate reversible pH‐ and temperature‐controlled changes in size and aggregation state in solution. When adsorbed within a sub‐monolayer at a solid surface, they support reversible changes in surface wettability in response to changes in solution pH, temperature, or illumination by laser light.
