The literature concerning the structure and stabilization of Aluminum hydride (AlH 3 ) was reviewed, and a detailed characterization of a stabilized sample was performed. The main disadvantage for the application of AlH 3 as an ingredient in propellants is its sensitivity towards oxidation and hydration. Stabilization by additives or a coating is required to ensure the safe handling of AlH 3 . Different stabilization concepts have already been described in the literature and are summarized here. The investigation of the AlH 3 sample shows an effective stabilization mechanism, which enables safe handling. It is concluded that this has been achieved by a protective coating with aluminum‐hydroxide clusters.
