It is demonstrated that the complex refractive index of liquid drops in a spray can be measured using the LDA visibility technique and averaging over a number of particles. A minimum of five scattering angles was required. One of these, close to the forward direction, monitored the particle size. It was estimated that the real part of the refractive index could be measured to within about ± 0.01 and the imaginary part to within ± 0.0004.
