In the science of particulate systems, existing nomenclature systems are not always consistent with each other. The same is true for their physical relevance. A coherent nomenclature system for denoting mean particle diameters is recommended and its physical relevance demonstrated. Comments have been made on a nomenclature for particle‐size distributions to support the proposed nomenclature for mean particle diameters. This nomenclature system does not contain any ambiguities and clearly conveys the physical meanings of mean particle diameters.
