A skylight in a cave in Quintana Roo, Mexico offers a different perspective of the tropical forest above. Some trees have the ability to grow roots into the caves, explicitly connecting the surface and subterranean. See Adams et al .'s article ‘Identifying tree roots in the caves of Quintana Roo, Mexico as a step toward ecological insights and improved conservation’ in this issue, which highlights their novel efforts to describe the roots.
