Experimental results on pulsed dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) initiation stages in air are given in the present work. Pictures of discharge afterglow and current traces from a sectioned electrode were collected and analyzed. The qualitative model of volume nanosecond DBD formation based on combination of well‐known model of self‐sustained gas discharge development together with surface charge spreading from electroscopic data is proposed. Represented qualitative explanation of observed phenomena involve summarized conclusions from cross‐correlation spectroscopy researches, well‐known streamer theory, model of self‐sustained gas discharge development, and dielectric surface charge spreading behavior from electroscopic measurements.
