In this work a large area plasma source on the basis of a surface discharge (SD) dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) was investigated for the plasma production and ion extraction. The SD‐DBD is an arrangement where one electrode is positioned on top of a dielectric while the second one is on its reverse side. Its first configuration had structured electrodes as a special feature. We mainly measured the extracted ion current, and in some cases the ion density. We also measured the influence of some parameters. Additionally, the ion density emitted at the outlet of a casing pipe was measured.
