Abstract The influence of the layer thickness and the microstructure of Ti and Ti6Al4V treated with oxygen plasma immersion ion implantation (PIII) on the respective wear rates are investigated. The implantation temperature was varied from 250 up to 550 °C at fluences between 6 and 18 × 10 17 at. · cm −2 . The wear tests were performed in a rotating ball‐on‐disc tribometer with an alumina ball. No difference in the wear rate was observed between Ti and Ti6AlV at higher temperatures, while significant differences were presented at lower temperatures, which were not solely correlated with the layer thickness.
