Abstract Here we present the results of experimental studies and theoretical computations of the spectroscopic parameters of polybenzimidazole (PBI) films formed by casting from a formic acid solution. The kinetics of the polymer luminescence is described, depending on the amount of the residual solvent. We demonstrate the changes in the intensity of the film luminescence with the formic acid release from the film, which is confirmed by the IR data. Based on the quantum chemistry computations, a mechanism is suggested for the formation of absorption and luminescence bands characteristic of the PBI matrix.
