A simple alternative solvent scale is suggested using phenylazonaphthol azo dyes which exhibit azo–hydrazone tautomerism, e.g. Orange II, enabling nanopolarities to be measured by UV–visible spectrophotometry. Copyright © 2005 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
