Validation of the mechanism of tetrachloroethene photochlorination at low C 2 Cl 4 concentrations was investigated. The reaction was examined in carbon tetrachloride solution. For initial tetrachloroethene concentrations below 2 mol I −1 , the solvent participates in a free‐radical chain photochlorination. The presence of CCl 4 disturbs the course of this particular chain reaction and influences the duration of the induction period.
