Abstract The odd–even behavior of n ‐alkanes shows that polyene molecules can be minority trapped in the crystalline phase of these saturated compounds, forcing to the fraction of trapped polyenes to adopt an all‐trans structure very close to coplanar. This evidence helps us explain the photophysical behavior of these important compounds based on conformational changes of their molecular structure.
