As shown here, unsubstituted diphenylpolyenes such as trans ‐stilbene, 1,4‐diphenyl‐1,3‐butadiene, 1,6‐diphenyl‐1,3,5‐hexatriene ( DPH ), and 1,8‐diphenyl‐1,3,5,7‐octatetraene ( DPO ) dimerize in appropriate inert solvents such as 2‐methylbutane (2MB) and methylcyclohexane (MeCyh). The UV–Vis absorption spectra for these dimeric associations partially confirm the assignations of Whitten and coworkers based on multilayered sets of polyene derivatives constructed by using the Langmuir–Blodgett technique. As also shown here, DPH and DPO dimeric associates in 2MB are undetectable by UV–Vis absorption spectroscopy, and so are those formed in MeCyh‐rich 2MB/MeCyh mixtures, where they are the prevalent forms of the two diphenylpolyenes.
