Abstract Challenging behaviour is a very common problem in older people with dementia. It can increase caregiver stress, reduce quality of life and increase the risk of institutionalisation and admission to hospital. Here, Dr Krishnamoorthy and Dr Anderson discuss the aetiology and treatment of challenging behaviour, emphasising that understanding the reasons behind the behaviour is the key to effective management.
