PV on noise barriers has been around for 14 years. During this time considerable progress has been achieved not only on the PV module technology, but also in the construction of photovoltaic noise barriers (PVNB). The first plant was built in Switzerland in 1989; at present there are numerous plants with a total documented power of about 850 kW p in operation in Europe. This paper gives a short overview on the progress and state of the art of PVNB in Europe. Copyright © 2004 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
