The reaction of difunctional poly(ethylene glycol) derivatives with dianhydrides afforded water‐soluble polymers containing periodically spaced carboxyl groups. The spectroscopic and thermal properties and in vitro cytotoxicity of chain‐extended polymers were investigated.
