Crosslinking copolymerization of styrene with divinylbenzene, butanediol dimethacrylate and ethyleneglycol dimethacrylate in the presence of benzil in the dissolved state results in benzil‐encapsulated crosslinked polymers. Resins with various crosslink densities were prepared by adjusting the monomer/crosslinker ratio. The benzil entrapped in the cavities was subjected to benzil‐benzilic acid rearrangement. The precursor resins and the rearrangement products were characterized by IR and 13 C NMR spectroscopy. The surface properties of polystyrene and benzil‐encapsulated polystyrene were compared by scanning electron micrography.
