Poly(spiroacetal–ether)s were prepared by two alternative synthetic paths (alkaline and acid‐catalysed conditions). Polycondensation of 3,9‐di‐(2‐hydroxyphenyl)‐2,4,8,10‐tetraoxaspiro[5,5]undecane and 1,4‐dibromobutane was performed in solvents (n‐butyl acetate, N , N ‐dimethylformamide, dimethyl/sulfoxide) catalysed by K 2 CO 3 or KOH/PTC systems. A similar polymer was formed in the reaction of 2,2‐dihydroxymethyl‐1,3‐propanediol with 1,4 bis(2‐formylphenoxy)butane, catalysed by p ‐toluenesulfonic acid. The molecular weight was determined by gel‐permeation chromatography. 1 H and 13 C NMR were used to study the details of the polymer structure. Copyright © 2003 Society of Chemical Industry
